I found a gem of a pub today on 3rd Ave between 55th & 56th. Across from the more popular P.J. Clarke’s, Pig n Whistle stocked a full bar with a variety of house drink specials and a friendly bar area. Because it was Sunday Funday, I allowed myself a good sampling of the bartender’s menu:

• the Bloody Mary was pretty decent, heavy on the horseradish which works for me
• the Blue Cosmopolitan was weak, tasting more like cherry Koolaid than a cosmo
• their Apple Pop was delicious for a lady, made with apple liquer, cranberry juice and white wine
• the best was their perfectly mixed Bailey’s Coffee which had me out the door with a smile.

This place is going to become a new part of our weekend routine, as 4 mixed drinks and 2 20 oz. beers came to a total of $35. In NYC, that’s unheard of. The bartender was nice.. and Irish to boot. Pig n whistle = solid afforable pub.
