Last but not least from my food and drink centric visit to Mexico City - a Kalimotxo (pronounced cali-moto). A Kalimotxo is a Spanish beverage consisting of 50% coke and 50% wine. It’s one of those easy recipes you have to travel 2000 miles just to ask yourself Why Didn’t I Think of That?

You can’t go to Mexico without drinking the tequila. This is my first ever tequila bandera. Americans make a mockery of tequila. We throw it back to try to hide the sting and get drunk asap. In Mexico, they sip high quality tequila with meals, savoring the flavors of the agave or mezcal plant. Shown here is the standard bandera. One shot glass tequila (Jose Cuervo Tradicional, now available in the States), one shot glass lime juice, and one shot glass sangrita (mix of tomato and orange juice, sometimes spicy). You sip these alternatively. You would be surprised at how enjoyable tequila can be!

Cerveza Victoria. From Wikipedia: “was first brewed by Cervecería Toluca y México starting in 1865, but Modelo acquired the brand when they bought this company in 1935. The beer is a Vienna-style, but is an amber color and lighter than the other Vienna beers brewed in Mexico”.
Once available only in Mexico, it debuted in Texas and Chicago in 2010 without too much popularity. I’m not quite sure why as it is a refreshingly smooth beer. If you are lucky enough to spot a bottle at your local Mexican grocery, please try it!

Lush Lady is going international! I just got back from an amazing trip to Mexico City where I went to be with my husband’s family on New Years Eve. I learned so much about food and drinks that I felt like I was on my own personal episode of No Reservations. I have some things to share with you and I’ll start with my favorite.
Micheladas are a beer beverage originating in San Luis, Mexico. They are similar to our Bloody Mary’s and considered a hangover cure. Below is the recipe I learned from Billy and Bernie, my favorite new cousins, and should be adjusted to your own taste.
Michelada+ Glass full of ice+ juice of 1.5 fresh limes+ 2 pinches salt+ 4 dashes Jugo Sazondar or soy sauce + 8 dashes Worchestire sauce+  couple dashes hot sauce such as Valentina+ 1/2 cup Clamato + 1/2 beer (preferably light beer)

The Lush family is building up a tradition of fine Christmas Eve dining. Last Christmas we were living in New York City and enjoyed dinner at Bobby Flay’s Mesa Grill. This year we are living in Atlanta and were blessed with Hugh Acheson’s (now of Top Chef fame) Empire State South prix fixe Christmas Eve dinner. The menu was 6 courses and included a warm winter salad, roasted leg of lamb, broccoli gratin, veal sweetbreads, a wonderful cheese plate, and finished with a croquembouche (French cream puff). BUT, you know I focus on the libations, and they were top notch as well. Shown above are:
+ Hugh’s Egg Nog+ Crimson King: Prunier VSOP, Cognac, Carpano Antica Formula, Drambuie, 2005 Tayor Fladgate Port LBV+ Lucifer’s Lampshade:  Deaths Door Gin, Punt-E-Mas, Cynar, Celery bitters, grapefruit oil

I got talked into buying the Vodka 3 brand vodka at the liquor store this weekend by a sales rep. It’s vodka distilled from soy. They market it as a healthier choice, as the vodka does not turn into sugars/carbs in your body since it is made from soy and not wheat. I’m not sure how much truth there is to the claim, but it is a nice and smooth vodka at the $20 price point.
