How could I NOT order a cocktail called Amelie? A beautiful movie with a gorgeous soundtrack translates to a bright and dreamy libation at one of the best looking restaurants in New York City. This is the Amelie cocktail at Balthazar: Grey Goose Orange, canton ginger, Ginger Iced Tea, and citrus.

There’s a lot to be said for a good Bloody Mary. We found this restaurant/wine bar Aria in the West Village and were drawn to the twinkly lights outside. Inside, we were blown away by a goat cheese plate, gnocchi, and spicy shrimp kabob over marinated artichokes.. and these Bloody Mary’s. For me, it was just the right amount of horseradish that made it. Well done Aria.

Have you ever wondered what Tom Waits would taste like if he was a cocktail? Wonder no longer. I give you Death of a Ladies Man from NYC’s bar Elsa. Rye, maple, Laphroaig 10 year old scotch, Lemon and Tobacco bitters. Yes, tobacco bitters. I’m not going to lie to you, I felt like I was smoking a pack of cigarettes and got a slight headache. But absolutely loved it for the novelty.

This was my favorite drink at NYC’s Elsa. Mercy of a Rude Stream: Lemongrass-Pink Peppercorn vodka, vanilla, honey, lime, mint, and baked apple bitters. It was a complexly sweet and peppery cocktail. You only had to pop of of the floating beads in your mouth to find instantly it was indeed a peppercorn.

I’m going to take you through my visit to Elsa in NYC’s East Village, drink by drink. This was most indefinitely the best bar I have ever been to. It’s the definition of mixology. Completely inventive drinks with unique ingredients made by master tenders of bar. The lighting is very low, relying mostly on tea lights, so forgive my crumby photography. I was more into the drinks than the documentation.
Shown here is Broken Mirror. Pernod Absinthe, green chartreuse, mint, lime, and dandelion-burdock bitters. I sware there was more to it because it took the guy 10 minutes to make. It was a masterpiece of light licorice flavor, and mint with a hint of citrus.

A Branca Cocktail from the Cafe at Eataly in NYC. I’m not going to lie, it tasted slightly medicinal, but I could see how the taste could easily be acquired.

Now that I am settled back in Atlanta (with internet, yay!), I can look back at all the places I had drinks in New York and pick favorites. Without second thought the bar I would run back to first on my next visit is …*drum roll*… Death and Company. Their cocktail menu is to die for. My favorite was the spicy “Southern Exposure” combining jalapeno infused tequila with lime juice and a red pepper puree. I would do just about anything to have one right now.
